Title: Swimming Pool

This work is a sonic presentation of four deserted rooms inside the ‘Zone of Alienation’ in Chernobyl, Ukraine. Jacob Kirkegaard deliberately picked rooms that once were active meeting points for people: A church in village Krasno, an auditorium, a gymnasium and a swimming pool in Pripyat.

The sound of each room was evoked by sonic time layering: In each room, he recorded 10 minutes of it and then played the recording back into the room, while at the same time recording it again. This process was repeated up to ten times. As the layers got denser, each room slowly began to unfold a drone with various overtones.

this is stunning.

This kind of thing is definitely my kind of thing.

Walking home from town this evening and someone shouted “Alan!” from a window across the street. I didn’t think I recognised them but then they shouted it again. So I crossed the road. Then someone said “are you really called Alan?”

I said yes.

They said “No way! We’re just shouting random names!”

I’ve lived next to Oran Mor for over a year now and haven’t ever really been able to hear the music, but three or four weeks back something changed and now at the weekend it’s loud enough to keep me awake. I can even hear it with earplugs in (but quiet enough at least that I can sleep).

I suppose I should go and complain…

This got linked from the Have Mercy Las Vegas facebook page and it’s had almost 100 views today! My photostream has had over 600 views today! The closest I’ve had to those numbers before was when I got linked to from a spanking website, although that was more like 1000 views in one day…

It’s just occurred to me that I really need to dig out my telescope and mount and try using the D800 for some astrophotography. It should give much better results than the D300!

Hell, even without the telescope I could probably get better shots of the Milky Way and Andromeda!
